South Africa has a litter and waste problem. But behind the rubbish in our streets, open spaces, rivers and communities is a deeper problem that is often overlooked: our behaviour.

This is why Clean South Africa Foundation exists.

Clean South Africa is a behavioural change organisation focused on changing the way South Africans think about litter, waste and their responsibility for the environments they live in.

The Foundation was created around a simple observation: we cannot build a clean South Africa without changing the behaviour that makes it dirty.

Littering has become normalised.

People throw rubbish out of car windows. Waste is left in parks and public spaces. Illegal dumping takes place in communities. Plastic and other waste finds its way into rivers and drains. Sometimes people walk past litter without picking it up because they believe it is somebody else’s responsibility.

Over time, these behaviours become part of everyday life.

Clean South Africa wants to change that.

Why do we exist?

We exist because we believe South Africa’s cleanliness crisis is not only an infrastructure problem. It is also a people problem.

There are real and serious challenges around waste collection, infrastructure, illegal dumping, municipal capacity and access to appropriate waste services. These challenges must be addressed.

But even the best waste infrastructure cannot solve a problem if people continue to litter, dump waste irresponsibly and treat public spaces as somebody else’s responsibility.

A bin can be provided.

A waste collection service can be available.

A street can be cleaned.

But if the behaviour does not change, the problem returns.

That is the gap Clean South Africa exists to address.

The role we all play

Clean South Africa is asking South Africans to look at the problem differently.

Instead of seeing litter as something that simply appears on our streets, we want people to recognise that every piece of litter has a human action behind it.

Someone dropped it.

Someone dumped it.

Someone walked past it.

Someone decided that it was not their responsibility.

This is not about blaming ordinary South Africans for every failure in the country’s waste system. It is about recognising that citizens are part of the solution.

The Foundation’s target audience is South Africans themselves — the majority of our people who use our streets, schools, taxis, parks, shopping areas, communities, beaches, rivers and public spaces every day.

We want to create a culture where people begin to ask:

What role am I playing in this?

And then:

What can I do differently?

Changing habits. Changing mindsets.

Clean South Africa’s work is built around Education, Awareness and Action.

We want to educate people about the consequences of littering and waste mismanagement.

We want to create awareness that challenges the idea that littering is normal or harmless.

And we want to turn awareness into action by encouraging people to take responsibility for the spaces around them.

Because behavioural change does not happen simply because people are told what not to do.

It happens when people begin to think differently, see differently and act differently.

A clean South Africa is everyone’s responsibility

Clean South Africa believes that the responsibility for a clean country cannot sit with government, municipalities or waste management companies alone.

It belongs to all of us.

Government has a responsibility to provide effective services and infrastructure.

Businesses have a responsibility to manage their waste responsibly.

Communities have a responsibility to protect the spaces they share.

And individuals have a responsibility for the choices they make every day.

These responsibilities can exist at the same time.

We can demand better infrastructure while also changing our own behaviour.

We can hold institutions accountable while taking responsibility for our own actions.

We can acknowledge the failures in the waste system without using those failures as an excuse to litter.

That is the conversation Clean South Africa wants to start.

What kind of South Africa are we creating?

The Foundation believes that cleanliness is about more than having streets without rubbish.

It is about pride, responsibility, dignity and the way we treat the places we call home.

The condition of our public spaces tells a story about how we see ourselves and how we see one another.

Clean South Africa wants to help change that story.

We want a South Africa where littering is no longer considered normal.

Where picking up a piece of rubbish is not seen as someone else’s job.

Where children grow up understanding that public spaces belong to all of us.

Where communities take pride in their surroundings.

And where being clean is not something we do only when someone is watching.

It becomes a habit.

Clean South Africa Foundation exists to help make that behavioural shift possible.

Because if we want a cleaner South Africa, we have to change more than our streets.

We have to change ourselves.
